Brunel designed this bridge at 25, never saw it finished, and they built it as his memorial — his greatest work became his tombstone.
Brunel's masterpiece spans the 76-metre-high Avon Gorge between Clifton and Leigh Woods, completed in 1864 from his original 1831 design. The bridge is free to walk or cycle across, offering dramatic views down the wooded gorge and back toward Bristol. It was built as a memorial to Brunel himself after his death, using the chains from his earlier Hungerford Bridge in London.
